Srinagar, June 16: Three militants were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday, officials said.

The gunfight erupted at Turkawangam village during a joint operation by security forces that was launched in the early hours.

“There was a police input about the militants’ presence in the area after which a cordon and search operation was launched. Then the gunfight ensued and three militants were killed,” a security official said.

Two AK-47 rifles and an INSAS rifle were seized from the site, he added. The operation is still in progress.

As many as 19 militants have been killed in five gunfights in south Kashmir since June 7, 17 of them in Shopian district. All the militants killed in the earlier four gunfights were locals.

Meanwhile, the Army said Pakistan violated ceasefire along the LoC in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district on Tuesday morning.

“Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Tangdhar sector by firing mortars and other weapons. Befitting response was given,” a Srinagar-based defence spokesman said.

There was no immediate report of any injuries in the cross-border shelling.
