Ramban: Ashok Kumar, Former MLA from Ramban strongly urged upon the Secretary (Higher Education) of Union territory of J&K to immediately swap the Minor Geography course (NEP) of third semester students in Government Degree College, Ramban to Major Geography course (NEP) as students were on indefinite hunger strike and their course work was getting hampered in the  above mentioned context.

In a statement issued here, Ashok has said that if the students were not allowed to choose subjects(disciplines) and courses as per their choice then NEP was only on papers and its implementation is utter failure due to sluggish higher administration dominated by bureaucracy.

Ashok has said that the five pillars of NEP 2020 i.e access, equity, quality, affordability and accountability have utterly failed due to improper execution and allotment of courses to students of GDC, Ramban.

Instead of exam preparation and self study students are on an indefinite hunger strike and demanding Geography as the Major Subject. It is a great injustice to the educated young generation.

Former MLA from Ramban has said that the Geography Major Subject has not been allocatted in any college of Ramban district as a result no one from this district can opt for Master Of Science MA/MSc in geography in future. This deliberate stagnation of the subject has caused dis-stressed among the students of GDC, Ramban which is located near the Ramban District Headquarters and also a nodal point among the other colleges of Ramban district.

Ashok has further stressed upon the higher education authorities to immediately swap the Minor Geography to Major Geography in GDC, Ramban as student’s course work is being hampered. The policy framework must be student centric or NEP is a failure and remains only on papers.
Ashok has further said that the ultimate focus of New Education Policy is student centric approach which aims to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education including vocational education from 26.3% (2018) to 50% by 2035. 3.5 Crore new seats will be added to Higher education institutions. However, the reality is students not even getting their choice subjects. It is a great injustice to the students of Ramban District.
