For the first time in the history of J&K, Armed Forces Veterans Day was celebrated at the Raj Bhawan, Jammu. On the occasion, Hon’ble Lt Governor of J&K, Shri Manoj Sinha paid rich tributes to the veterans and gratefully acknowledged their valour and sacrifices made by them in the line of duty to safeguard the national interests. The function was attended by a large number of Ex-servicemen, Veer Naaris, decorated soldiers and staff of Sainik Welfare Deptt J&K.
Hon’ble Lt Governor while addressing the Veterans and veer Naaris announced that J&K administration will give land for the construction of Sainik Colonies to accommodate families of fallen heroes. He further said that 25 lakh Ex-gratia for the families of fallen soldiers was less and he will ensure that the amount is raised this year. He also appealed to all citizens to generously contribute towards the Armed Forces Flag Day fund for the welfare of Ex-servicemen and Veer Naaris. He also advocated that Ex-servicemen including officers, soldiers and policemen should be roped in for the decisive fight against the terrorism.
During his welcome address, Brig Gurmeet Singh Shan, Director Sainik Welfare Deptt, J&K thanked the Hon’ble Lt Governor for implementation of a large number of schemes for the welfare of ex-servicemen and widows in J&K over the past three years. These include schemes like enhanced Ex Gratia of 25 lakhs, financial assistance of Rs 5000/- per month for veterans of J&K Militia and World War, Approval of two 100 bedded children hostels, one each at Jammu and Srinagar, enhanced Annuity for various gallantry and distinguished service awards, Relaxation to ESM test , Age relaxation etc for recruitment in Govt jobs, financial assistance of Rs 50,000/- for marriage of two daughters, assistance of Rs 50,000/ for re-marriage of widows, medical treatment grant of Rs 50,000/- for Non pensioner, serious disease grant of Rs 1.50 lakh for Non pensioner and financial assistance of Rs 3000/- per month for 100 % disabled children of ESM.
Hon’ble Lt Governor Shri Manoj Sinha also honoured all the Veterans and Veer Naaris who were present for the function and interacted with them at length over a cup of tea.
